Huffman Wins Two Track & Field National Championships
TONY HUFFMAN ran his way into two National Championships in the 5K and 10K races at the USA Track & Field Masters Outdoor Championships in Huntsville, AL in July. He also posted a 7th place finish in the 1500 meters.
It has been 30 years since Tony competed in the 10k. All of his distance base work over the last year and his speed work over the last few months paid off. His winning time was a full 6 minutes faster over the 6.2 miles than the #2 competitor! He ran negative splits for each of the last 3 miles (each mile faster than the last). This is racing at the highest level with world class tactics.
“I have been doing this running/racing thing since I was 16 years old (albeit with a 28-year break from age 32 to 60), so I am not some late bloomer who discovered running late in life. I knew what I was getting into back in July 2022, when I attended the World Track & Field Championships with Tony Greer, in Eugene, Oregon and confided to him that I was thinking about getting in shape and competing in Masters Track & Field. Little did I know how competitive Masters Track & Field is and specifically, how talented the 60-64 age group is that I would be competing in. But I found out quickly that Masters Track & Field can be humbling, finishing dead last in my first Masters track meet in the 800 meters and 8th in the 1,500 meters. The second year was not much better: 5th in the 5K and 14th in the 1,500. So, in the perfect storm that was Huntsville in July 2025, I improved my finishing positions significantly,” Tony explained.
A native of Pensacola, FL, Tony attended Mississippi College on a track scholarship where he majored in accounting, receiving a BS in Business Administration and graduating with distinction. In 1984, he chose to stay in Mississippi and went to work for the Jackson office of Ernst & Young (Ernst & Whinney).
Tony has always given back faithfully to his alma mater and the community in many ways throughout his career and was the recipient of the MSCPA Public Service Award in 2002. He is a founder of the Mississippi Blues Marathon which continues to be one of the foremost tourist attractions for the city of Jackson. He was also an active member of the Mississippi Olympic Committee where he served as coordinator for the Olympic Torch Run. Tony was selected as a 1996 Olympic Torchbearer to carry the Olympic Flame as it passed through Jackson.
He is the owner and founder of Huffman & Company, CPA, P.A. in Flowood where he works alongside his wife Laurie and his son Rob, both CPAs. He credits his family and the firm for their support in his training and current success as he pursues his passion for running. Tony is a key person for the Society in our advocacy efforts and was instrumental in getting our numerous bills passed during and since the pandemic. He is serving as Co-Chair of the MSCPA Legislation Committee and mentoring Rob as the YCPA Chair of the committee.
